Scan of cover for Directory of Residents in the Citrus Heights Community from 1937.

The Citrus Heights Community Club was formed in 1924 to provide civic and social services to the community. This was at a time when government agencies were unable to provide basic services such as road maintenance and fire protection. In 1928, the Community Club purchased the old Sylvan Schoolhouse and moved it a quarter mile south on Sylvan Road. The old schoolhouse served as a center for civic and social activities in Citrus Heights for the next 60 years. The signature event of the Community Club was the annual “Road Day”. Everyone in the community pitched in to work on the roads followed by a potluck meal.

The Citrus Heights Community Club periodically published a directory of residents and businesses. Thanks to former Citrus Heights resident Julie Geistlinger, we have a 1937 directory to share with you. Please note the absence of phone numbers for individual residents. Less than half of the households had a phone in 1937. If you did, you spoke to an operator who could probably connect you to someone local without a number.
